POSITION
Camp Co-ordinator (two positions)
PURPOSE
To prepare and deliver the 2023 Shumka Summer Dance Camps while ensuring that every camper comes away with a greater understanding of Ukrainian culture and a passion for the art of Ukrainian dance.
SUGGESTED DUTIES
- Deliver and oversee activity programming, including fitness, recreation, Ukrainian cultural, and theatre-arts programs to children and youth ages 3 – 17.
- Plan and prepare all elements required for activity programming, including:
- Spearhead the research, design, and scheduling of all non-dance programming (day camps and overnight camps) to include a solid Ukrainian cultural and dance focus, games, crafts, and other activities to build team spirit, physical health, self-esteem, and self-awareness.
- Prepare materials necessary for activity programming, including colouring pages, activity sheets, crafts, games, camp themes, etc. Includes the purchase of supplies and working within set budgets and timelines.
- Design programming for before-camp, lunchtimes, and after-camp to create “camp spirit” and an atmosphere of fun, excitement, and group cohesion.
- Train, monitor, and evaluate camp volunteers (Leaders-In-Training).
- Create and deliver a training/mentorship/supervision program for the Leaders-in Training, implementing, where possible, the guidelines and standards of the Alberta Camping Association, including crisis and risk management, emergency aid and intervention, workplace safety, teamwork, leadership, and communication.
- Hire Leaders-In-Training and staff the program.
- Supervise campers and assist activity facilitators.
- Manage before and after-care program and direct lunch supervision.
- Direct facility upkeep.
- Create, organize, and distribute paperwork, including program evaluation forms and camp confirmation packages.
- Manage relationships with caregivers of campers.
- Solve issues related to the health and safety of campers.
- Maintain a collection of activities, recommendations, and feedback, and prepare a final report on the qualitative aspects of the program.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess an Alberta driver’s license.
- Must possess current First Aid certification.
- Must have at least two years of experience as a Leader-in-Training with the Shumka Summer Dance Camps.
- Possessing knowledge of Ukrainian culture/dance is an asset.
TIME FRAME AND WAGE
8 weeks – 40 hrs/week – $18/hr. HOURS TOTAL: 320 hours/position.
Start Date: July 3, 2023 to End Date: August 25, 2023.
LOCATION
Day Camps: Shumka Dance Centre, Edmonton, AB (10515 111 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 3E8).
Overnight Camps: Camp Oselia, Wabamun Lake, AB (Range Road 53, Highway 16).
SUPERVISION
The Shumka School Principal is on-site to provide the staff members with full-time supervision and guidance. The environment is highly structured with daily interaction and feedback. This approach allows the staff member to learn and practice the primary skills of leadership, decision-making, problem-solving and applying constructive self-feedback with an experienced mentor nearby at all times. The supervisor is essentially assisting and guiding the staff members with lots of the day-to-day tasks and planning and is therefore involved in the dynamic and providing immediate and ongoing feedback and communication to the staff members.
