After decades of performances near and far, the whirlwind returned in 2022 with its tenth Canadian tour.
Shumka means “whirlwind,” a powerful display of artistry, energy and emotion through dance. Over 60 years of performance history has shaped the Ukrainian Shumka Dancers’ signature dance style. The Toronto Star called Shumka “Canada’s National Treasure,” and the Globe & Mail compared Shumka to Riverdance.
The Shumka On Tour program showcased four of Shumka’s newest works: the all-ages Disneyesque Mosquito’s Wedding; a tribute in film to the Ukrainian pioneers in Canada, Promised Land; a salute to the bravery of the people in current Ukraine,My Yeh; and a celebration of the emotion, energy and evolution of Ukrainian dance, Echoes of Hopak. The mixed work program featured original music, projection and multimedia design, film, and new choreography.
Said arts writer Fawnda Mithrush: Shumka on Tour is pure glory, and a salve for today’s troubling headlines. You will leave uplifted and reminded that culture transcends borders and boundaries — no matter your heritage, Shumka will invigorate your spirit.
And from international opera director Brian Deedrick: I was truly blown away… by the end of the show, the tears in my eyes were those of happiness. Thank you, thank you, thank you a million times over for allowing me to be a part of such an astonishing event, especially in these heartbreaking times… in times like this, there can still be such an outpouring of pride, joy and celebration. Isn’t that what the arts are all about?

Leading up to and throughout Shumka’s 60th anniversary celebrations, you saw this specially-designed logo. What was the rationale behind the word-mark?
As Victor Hugo once said, “Change your leaves. Keep intact your roots.” With a strong foundation, a majestic tree grows new leaves decade after decade.
With deep roots in both Canada and Ukraine, Shumka creates new works as part of its mission to develop a unique art form. In all seasons, with flying colours, the tradition remains in motion.
Shumka is a family. Generations of dancers, builders and leaders creating an indelible magic borne from a desire to honour one’s heritage, while remaining relevant to the world today.
With respect for the past, new life and new art is ever evolving. As Shumka soars past 60, we reflect. We grow. We celebrate..
