Ukrainian Shumka Dancers – Professional Company

The Ukrainian Shumka Dancers (Shumka) is seeking professional designers to take short meetings with our Artistic and Production teams on February 13 and 14 for upcoming dance theatre productions with the professional company.
We are interested in connecting with designers who are excited by large-scale movement, theatrical storytelling, and contemporary approaches to performance design. These meetings are exploratory and focused on building relationships for future projects.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome submissions from designers working in:
- Set / Scenic Design
- Costume Design
- Lighting Design
- Projection / Media Design
- Sound Design
Designers from dance, theatre, opera, and interdisciplinary performance practices are encouraged to apply.
Meeting Details
- Dates: February 13 & 14
- Format: Online and in-person
- In-person location: Shumka Dance Centre, 10515 111 Street, Edmonton
- Meetings will be brief, one-on-one conversations

- An opportunity to share your work, practice, and interests
- A chance to learn more about Shumka’s artistic direction, production scale, and upcoming projects
- Relationship-building for future professional engagements
(These meetings are not tied to a specific production contract.)

Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Selected designers will be contacted to schedule meetings on February 13 or 14.
Shumka is committed to working with artists from diverse backgrounds and perspectives and encourages submissions from designers who identify as Indigenous, Black, racialized, LGBTQ2S+, Deaf, or disabled.
We look forward to meeting designers interested in bold physicality, theatrical spectacle, and collaborative creation.
Call for Wardrobe Volunteers
Ukrainian Shumka Dancers – Professional Company
The Ukrainian Shumka Dancers (Shumka) is seeking Wardrobe Volunteers to support upcoming professional dance theatre productions.
This is an opportunity to work in our wardrobe shop, behind the scenes on large-scale performances (depending on if the venue is an I.A.T.S.E house), support professional dancers, and be part of a collaborative, high-energy production environment.
What You’ll Be Doing
Wardrobe Volunteers may assist with:
• Costume building and alterations,
• Preparation and organization for productions
• Dressing dancers during rehearsals and performances, including costume changes and backstage support (if performing in a non-I.A.T.S.E venue)
• Basic repairs and maintenance (hand-sewing skills an asset, but not required)
• Strike, laundry, and costume care as needed
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome volunteers who:
• Are reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in fast-paced environments
• Have an interest in costume, fashion, theatre, or dance
• Are comfortable working as part of a team and taking direction
• Are available for rehearsals and/or performances (scheduling to be confirmed)
Students, emerging designers, and those curious about wardrobe work in professional performance contexts are strongly encouraged to apply.
Time Commitment
• Scheduling will vary by production
• Some evening and weekend availability may be required
• Volunteers will be scheduled based on availability and interest
Next Steps / Meetings
• Meetings will be scheduled on February 15 for volunteers who express interest
• Meetings may be online or in person, depending on availability
• These short meetings will help match volunteers with upcoming production needs
