“So many people come and go through Shumka, and to be able to leave a bit of us behind…it means a lot. Especially when the ones we love [aren’t here], it’s wonderful to come into the studio knowing that a little bit of this is a little bit of Lorrie.”

Few families have given so selflessly to Shumka as the Sulymas. Michael and Lorraine first met in dancing with the company in the late 1970s, marrying and having two children, Michael Jr. and Larissa, who went on to continue their family legacy with Shumka. Michael has produced numerous Shumka works and tours, while Michael Jr. and Larissa have dazzled audiences in leading roles in Mosquito’s Wedding and Kobzar respectively. After Lorraine’s passing in 2006, her generosity and support was honoured with the Sulyma-Gowing Boardroom in the Shumka Dance Centre.

The Sulymas’ commitment to excellence and unwavering support have allowed Shumka to fluorish throughout the years, and will continue to do so into the future. Thank you Michael, Michael Jr., Larissa, and Lorraine.
