During his time in Shumka, George Chrunik wore many hats. He was a dancer, artistic committee member, and choreographer, just to name a few. He was also known as one of the jokesters of the company.
“Touring was a very special time because we got to spend time together. And preparing for tours was something special too. Touring wasn’t always as glamorous as it seems. We would walk to the theatres, then do our show. The next day we would get up for the matinee and then do another show that evening, so we were exhausted by the end of it. The Ukraine tour was probably the highlight of all the tours. My mom went back to Ukraine after being in Canada for 60 years. She brought the rest of my family, including many distant relatives who I’d never met, to our show in Lviv. I got to show my relatives something that was incredibly special to me and our heritage.
There were definitely times when we were stressed or tired, so often there were people who pulled pranks or made jokes to lighten the mood. Whenever there was an opportunity to do something unique, we would take it. We got in trouble a few times, but it was always fun.”
George danced from 1975 until his retirement in 1991. He taught Ukrainian dance for over 40 years and has inspired many people to join Shumka. Thank you, George.
