“I always loved how Shumka took the base of Ukrainian dance and infused other genres to create these other incredible, magical storylines and themes. I think it’s important to find your cultural importance in contemporary society. Shumka does this very well.”
Dave Ganert has been a very strong artistic influence in Shumka over many years. He joined the company in 1991 and has been creating and choreographing since 1998. Dave played an instrumental part in the development of Shumka’s Cinderella, as well as many other shows. Before becoming Artistic Director, Dave was the Principal of the Shumka School.
“It was a privilege to mentor so many young students and instructors. Mentoring is a funny thing; there’s a delicate balance between teaching your own style and letting your students find their own creativity.”
One of Dave’s most notable pieces is the 50th Anniversary Hopak, which was choreographed to evolve one of the most famous Ukrainian dances with expression, and to evolve women in the piece.
Thank you for your many contributions to Shumka’s artistic growth, Dave.
