Steven Chwok and his family have been supporters of Shumka for 40 years… and in many different ways over those decades. Shumka Music Director Gene Zwozdesky first approached Steven in 1982, when he wanted him to play the tsymbaly (hammer dulcimer) in Shumka’s first tour with live music. Steven, along with a group of talented musicians, continued to play for Shumka’s 1984 and 1987 performances. Upon Gene’s passing in 2018, Steven wrote a moving tribute for his friend and mentor, who had given him the incredible experiences of playing live for Shumka.
As a part-time radio announcer at CFCW Radio – and host of the popular Sunday night ZABAVA program – Steven always promotes Shumka’s productions to his listeners.
Steven’s wife, Deonne was always there, supporting her husband and Shumka. She was taught Ukrainian dance by Shumka alumni, had attended many performances, and was a fan of the group from the start. She’s continued her support through fundraising, volunteering, and enrolling their four children in the Shumka School of Dance (SSD).
“When we got married and had kids, it just made sense to put them in the Shumka School. We know that it’s expected of us. If no one donates, fundraises, or supports the company, then Shumka can’t continue doing what they do.”
Annalise, the eldest, has now been part of Shumka for five years. She grew up dancing at the Shumka School and was part of many performances including the Nutcracker and Shumka’s 50th Anniversary show. It was during the 50th Anniversary that Annalise knew she had to be part of the company. Ten years later, she is a full company member in the 60th Anniversary production, and her dream has come true. Annalise also found her passion teaching Ukrainian dance when she was a Leader-in-Training at Shumka Summer Dance Camps. She moved on to become a Junior Instructor at SSD, and now teaches the Zorianka Ukrainian Dancers.
Twins Karynna and Lukys, and youngest daughter, Yaleena, were also a part of many Shumka productions, like the Nutcracker. Karynna and Yaleena will both be graduating from SSD next year, with hopes of joining the company in the future. Lukys currently dances with the Viter Ukrainian Dancers and Folk Choir, which he is enjoying very much. It was a special day when all four children shared the Jubilee Auditorium stage during the 30th Anniversary performance of Shumka’s Classic Hopak in 2015.
To Steven, Deonne, Annalise, Karynna, Lukys, and Yaleena, thank you for your continued support and participation in the world of Shumka!
