PAUL OLIJNYK

Folkloric encyclopedia.  Humble team player. Relationship builder. Passionate advocate for Shumka and Ukrainian folk dance.

Just a few ways to describe an individual who has been a creative force in Shumka and a consistent calming presence within the studio for over a decade.

Paul Olijnyk has a talent for creating choreography with an attention to authenticity, innovation and detail, as demonstrated in his contributions to productions such as Kobzar, Mosquito’s Wedding, and Ancestors and Elders, while growing into the senior leadership position of Creative Director that he holds today.

Paul’s status as a master instructor and mentor is well-established across Canada and beyond. He is passionate about teaching future generations of dancers and is heavily involved with the Shumka School, where he has deeply influenced hundreds of students, while guiding and inspiring an entire generation of dance instructors as well.

As a health and wellness advocate, Paul has promoted a greater focus in Shumka for developing a more holistic approach to dancer health.  He played a pivotal role in establishing the Wellness Committee, and dancer well-being and self-care have become a priority in the studio under his watchful, nurturing eye.

Paul has dedicated countless hours and exceeded expectations on countless occasions.  He is highly respected within the studio; some have told me that HE is the reason people stay in Shumka.  With a notable ability to cultivate connections, lead by example and remain loyal to his convictions while staying humble throughout the artistic process, Paul has given completely of himself and Shumka is better for it.
